Is Romance Dead?

“Vanity Fair” has released a list of  “The 25 Best Romantic Comedies of All Time.”  See the #1 movie…

Last night was movie night at my house. And I finally got my wife to watch one of the all-time greats, though she had been avoiding it for years. Off her disappointment of watching “The Meg” shark movie this weekend, I think she was primed to watch ANY shark movie that had the promise of being a better film. And so she finally agreed to watch my personal favourite… Sharknado!

About halfway through the movie, she declared she was going upstairs to grab a drink. Which is usually my wife’s way of exiting a movie she’s hating. She’ll make up an excuse about having to go to the washroom, or grab a drink, or grab a snack. And then, like the dumb character in a horror movie, she leaves the room and never returns. But as a result of having invested her  time in watching the greatest shark movie of alltime, I unwittingly committed myself to watching a movie of her choosing next time. Likely a romantic comedy. But if it is, it’ll probably be a movie we’ve seen before because according to Vanity Fair, there have been no good romantic comedies in the last 15 years!

While three movies from their top 25 list of the greatest romantic comedies of all-time are from that year, there are no newer movies listed at all!

Which leads to the question… is romance dead at the movies? Is it just no longer funny? Is romance just dead overall? Has there really not been a good romantic comedy in the last 15 years? (If there is, comment below)
