Never one to play it safe, Maren Morris says she was unsure about how her latest hit, “Girl,” would be received at country radio, but as the song sits inside the Top 15 on the charts and climbing, she said that living on the edge has sort of become her comfort zone.

“‘Girl’ just felt like it was boundary-less, genre-wise, and it was emotional and I kind of love operating where I just scare the hell out of myself and take a risk, and I feel like all of my songs at radio have been risky but in the last year or so have really started to pay off.”

Maren’s “Girl” video is up for Video and Female Video of the Year at next month’s CMT Music Awards, where she’s also nominated in the Performance of the Year category with Brandi Carlile for “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” from 2018 CMT Artists of the Year. The CMT Music Awards will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on June 5th at 8 pm.
