Ex-Scientologist Leah Remini slams Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in 20/20 TV interview
On “20/20” Friday night, they aired the interview with Leah Remini, where she talked about her break with the Church of Scientology. One of the things that helped sour the relationship was Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ wedding. Leah was there, but it ended up being a pretty awful experience. And the Church ultimately accused her of RUINING the wedding.
Remini had been asked to invite her friends Jennifer Lopez and then-husband Marc Anthony on behalf of Cruise, but was then separated from them at the ceremony.
“They were trying to extract me. I can only assume because they wanted to make Jennifer a Scientologist. Maybe I was barring that road for them,” she said.
Holmes filed a knowledge report against Remini following the wedding, saying her loud behaviour had been inappropriate.
Also, she revealed that Tom serenaded Katie with “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling” at their wedding.
Sure, it figures in one of the most famous scenes of his career, but is it appropriate to sing to your bride on your wedding day?
Leah Remini said she went to the Church of Scientology to warn them to rein in Tom Cruise after he went off on Matt Lauer and Brooke Shields, but they wouldn’t listen to her. (She said she told them that he needs to stop talking and just be an actor, but she was immediately “dealt with.” And that being critical of Tom meant she was critical of the church itself.
But when ABC News reached out to Holmes for comment, she responded with a simple: “I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”
For now, it looks like Suri’s mom is continuing her private stance on the church. Remini’s book,Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, will hit bookstores on Nov. 3.
